Rugby in the Fingal capital took another big leap forward last week, following a two-day promotion at the Pavilions Shopping Centre…
Organised by Swords Rugby Club, the event formed part of the club’s Fingal-wide recruitment drive and drew a huge amount of interest.
Members of the club handed out thousands of information leaflets and were on hand to handle the many queries from prospective players and members. ‘The promotion weekend was a great success and it really couldn’t have gone better,’ Swords RFC president, Alan Butler said.
‘We had a really positive response, with dozens of new players signing up and a host of new names hopefully coming on board for the new season.
‘It’s the first of a number of initiatives we are undertaking to help develop our club at all levels and establish ourselves as an integral part of the Swords community.’
Swords will this season field men’s teams at 1st, 2nd and Over-35s level, as well as Under-19s, while the club’s youth section will expand further at the other end of the age spectrum.
The first-ever Under-13 and Under-8 teams to pull on the green jersey will take to the playing field in the coming weeks, while sides will also line out at Under-12, Under-10 and Under-8 level.
The club launched its mini rugby section at the weekend in Brackenstown, which included a new nursery section, for four to seven year olds, for the first time.
‘Our preparations couldn’t have gone better so far and it all bodes well for the coming year, as well as the future,’ Swords RFC president, Alan Butler said.
‘Our new coaching team has already laid down strong foundations, we have had an influx of new players and our youth development officer, Jamie Gormly, is back coaching in the local schools once again.
‘Special thanks must go to the Pavilions for facilitating our promotions weekend. Anyone interested in playing or supporting rugby would be more than welcome to join us.’
