The IRFU Tag Rugby Programme, in association with Leinster Rugby, is a non-contact, social form of rugby being hosted at rugby clubs throughout the province.

Now in its 16th year, the IRFU Tag Rugby programme will be operated at provincial level by the host clubs. With leagues graded, all levels of ability and fitness are catered for.

This form of the game has been hugely successful in not only keeping rugby clubs busy but by welcoming newcomers to the rugby family to play also. Its non-contact nature and social aspect make it accessible to both male and female players

Being the only official IRFU programme, all referees are IRFU-affiliated as are the laws under which the games are played.

Tag Rugby FAQs

I’ve never played any rugby before. Can I still play?

Of course you can! There is no contact in Leinster Tag Rugby. It is easy to pick up as well as great fun. Leagues are graded according to ability.

What do I need in order to play?

To start with, the only truly compulsory accessory required is a pair of approved Tag rugby shorts.

They must be shorts (made by any manufacturer) that bear no pockets and sport a velcro patch on each hip for a tag to be attached upon.

How many on a Tag team?

The recommended squad size for a Tag team is 12-14 players. During a game, each team must have no more than seven players on the field of play at any one time. Of the seven players on-field, three must be female.

Am I automatically insured playing?

Leinster Rugby recommends that each player undertake their own Personal Accident Insurance cover against any injury sustained from playing the game itself during the Tag rugby season.

Where can I find the Rules of Tag Rugby?

The updated edition IRFU’s Laws of Tag Rugby are downloadable HERE.

How do I sign up my team to participate?

At the moment, relevant governmental restrictions are in place, so such rugby activity is on-hold. Therefore registrations currently unavailable.
