Presented by Coach Development Officers and Community Rugby Officers from Leinster Rugby the course was run out of Oatlands College, Stillorgan through Blackrock Education Centre and out of Cabra Parkside Community Sports Centre (by kind permission of Dublin City Council) through Drumcondra Education Centre.
The course introduces Tag Rugby to teachers’ PE classes as a means of helping in the acquisition of an appropriate range of movement skills in a variety of contexts.
The course examined the Fundamental Movement Skills, Fundamental Games Skills and Game Specific Skills. The objectives of the PE curriculum can be delivered across the PE strands using the medium of Tag Rugby.
One teacher, who completed the course two years ago, was back this summer bringing two school colleagues with her, saying: “It’s a great course and I just wanted to come back to experience it again. It’s the most enjoyable summer course I’ve ever done.”
There were also two teachers who travelled from Galway for the week in Oatlands College.
The programme was enjoyed so much that several of the teachers have come together to form a team to play Tag Rugby in a local league.
To support the implementation back in schools, in addition to the receiving all the course material and teaching resources on a Leinster Rugby memory stick, each school will receive an ALDI Play Rugby Pack from the IRFU and all teachers will be invited back to attend a three-hour CPD evening in the autumn.
