A few years ago Loreto Secondary School took part and won a Leinster Branch Colleges Leprechaun Rugby tournament which was held in Old Belvedere RFC…

From this event Wexford Wanderers Vixens adult team was formed and the rest, as they say, is history.

On February 1st another tournament took place in the magnificent St Joseph’s Community Club, when five National Primary Schools participated in an all girl “Tag Rugby” Blitz for the first time ever in Wexford.

The Blitz comprised of teams (schools) from Barntown N.S., The Faythe N.S., Kilrane N.S., Lady’s Island N.S. and Gael Scoil featuring two competitions; one for 5th class students and the other for 6th class students.

On the day 164 girls competed; playing 24 games in a most enjoyable experience.

For some girls it was their first ever experience of any type of competition and this event will give them huge confidence to compete in other sports. This was the first of three blocks of N.S. Blitzes and the rest will be held in March and April respectively.

The event was organised by Leinster Rugby CROs Noel Ferguson and Maurice Logue and both officers acted as referees on the day. Many thanks to the teachers from all the schools and to St Joseph’s Community Hall committee.

From little acorns grow big trees and when the three blitzes have been completed coaching of the girls into Tag and contact rugby will take place at Wexford Wanderers R.F.C. at Park Lane on Saturdays and Tuesdays. It is then hoped to formulate officially W.W.R.F.C, Vixens Cub Section.

Women’s Rugby is on the up and up and by creating a girl’s “Cub ”section in the club will not only be a “feeder” to the adult Vixens but it will give young girls the opportunity to play rugby similar to the very successful boys section (mini’s) in the club.
