Tullamore R.F.C. have commissioned a bronze bust of Oliver McGlinchey, who died in December 2008, and this will be unveiled in the Clubhouse on Saturday after the Leinster League Division 1A match against Coolmine…
The ceremony will be at 5.30pm sharp and over before the Leinster K.O. against Saracens in Wembley.
The Late Oliver or “The Goalie” as he was known was an active member of Tullamore for over 70 years. As a player he won a Towns Cup medal in 1946 and was Captain in 1942/43. He was also capped by Leinster Juniors in 1939/40. He then became a referee in the late 40’s for 20 years and was elected as President of the A.R.L.B. in 1969/70.
As an Administrator he has few if any equals in Rugby as he was Club President on two occasions – 1961/62 and 1978/79. Oliver held the position of Honorary Secretary for 10 years, Honorary Treasurer for 21 years and Fixtures Secretary, for a mere 6 years! He was also a Trustee of the Club for over 30 years and present at matches every Sunday.
Oliver also represented the Club on the Midlands Area Comm and was on the Leinster Junior Committee for several years as well as the Referee’s association before becoming its President.
Anyone who knew Oliver is most welcome and his family would be delighted to meet you.
