Jack Conan joined the Official Leinster Supporters’ Club for their second virtual Q&A of the season ahead of Sunday evening’s 40-5 win over Cardiff Blues.
In an interview that covered a variety of topics, Jack spoke about everything from staying busy and focused during lockdown and his recovery from injury through to his GAA background and also about upcoming Leinster and Ireland games.
Having found a sporting love with Gaelic football, he wouldn’t have predicted the change that has come about in his life since first walking into St Gerard’s School as a 13-year-old.
“Up until I was about 15 or 16, it was my first passion and I would have preferred it to rugby even at that later stage,” Jack explains.
“The primary school I went to was just big into Gaelic and all my friends would have played for the club and my older brother still plays there (Kilmacanogue).
“It’s been a while since I kicked a few points but it’s definitely something I’d like to go back to. It wasn’t until I went into St Gerard’s that I started playing rugby at 13.”
Following a disappointing start to the year with injury, he has been forced to watch on from the sidelines but the No 8 has been increasingly impressed with the young Leinster players being granted the opportunity the shine.
“It’s been absolutely incredible. I remember when I first came into the Academy, the senior team and the Academy were almost two different set-ups.
“Now everyone trains together as much as possible.
“It means when lads go away to Irish camps, the younger lads have been exposed to high quality training, they’ve been exposed to the systems so when people are away they can step in seamlessly because they know what they’re doing.”
