A number of primary schools in the West Offaly area converged on West Offaly Lions RFC for the first blitz of the year recently…

The schools that attended the blitz were:
• Clonmacnoise NS
• St Mary’s Pullough NS
• St Mary’s Cloghan NS
• High St NS
• St Cynocs Ferbane NS
• Rashina NS

Over 100 pupils from 5th and 6th class were in attendance for the tag rugby blitz and the weather did not seem to be a problem for anyone, with misty showers not affecting the rugby at all.

The teams were made up of players that are currently playing rugby with West Offaly Lions, other clubs and players that have never played rugby at all. This gave the games a nice blend of experience, excitement and freshness.

Corey Carty CCRO of West Offaly was really happy with the day. “The kids have really enjoyed their tag rugby over the last few weeks and it’s a great and fun way for them to try out their new skills against other schools”.

Corey says rugby participation is greatly improving in West Offaly. “I think rugby is definitely on the rise with the proof that six schools were involved”.
