Over the past three years there has been a dramatic increase in the number of girls playing rugby in Wicklow Rugby club…
This has seen the numbers rise from 15 girls jump to a wide range of ages such as 20 girls at U12’s playing tag rugby , 35 U15’s , 30 U18’s and 20 senior ladies training regularly.
On a Monday and Wednesday night the U15 and U18 girl’s teams train together and there is on average over 50 girls training between the two teams. This success is down the hard work of the coaches Ciara McConnell (Senior Ladies Player) and Roan Griffey. Leanne Sullivan (Senior Ladies Player), Paul McDevitt (Former first team captain), John Alvey, John Buckley and the club CCRO, Shane McDonald also assist.
This huge increase of numbers have seen the players develop hugely over such a short period of time and just recently six of the U18’s team have been selected to be part of the Leinster U18’s team that took part in recent interpros in Westmanstown.
The six girls are Becky Wray, Nicole Murphy, Heidi Keogh, Lauren Barry, and Daisy McKenzie and also Rachel Griffey (who is also team captain).
It is hoped that with the hard work that is being done in the club to support the girls and women’s game that in the coming years there will be even more players representing Leister and maybe even Ireland one day.
Big ‘pat on the back’ goes to the coaches of the various teams and also the club CCRO for the hard work being done
If you are interested in playing then training is Monday and Wednesday nights 6.30-8.00pm for both U15 and U18’s and Saturday morning for U12’s, please contact wicklowccro@leinsterrugby.ie.
