Last Sunday saw a wet and windy day at Ashtown Lane to see Wicklow’s Under-14 take on Wexford Wanderers in the final of the hotly contested Leinster Under-14 Cup…
Both Wexford and Wicklow are bringing through strong teams for the future, and in consideration of a Wexford side that hadn’t lost all season Wicklow knew they would have to pull out all the stops against a team that were not used to losing.
Wexford opened the scoring in the 15th minute when try from their No 8, and what followed showed the mental strength of these young Wicklow men as they fought their way into the teeth of the gale through strong running by both backs and forwards. Great support and a number of recycled phases saw Wicklow ‘s number 8 break down the blind side breaking through two tackles to get in for a fantastic try.
With the wind at their backs in the second half Wicklow made ground into the Wexford half and following a great break by their centre the ball was recycled and another break down the blindside led to what would be the winning try. What followed was one of the greatest defensive displays seen in Ashtown Lane as a strong running Wexford outfit were knocked back continuously by a Wicklow side showing tenacity beyond their years. As full time approached both sides of spectators roared on their teams.
The final whistle blew and was met with huge roars from the crowd, crowning this great young Wicklow team Leinster Champions.
